CATIONIC POLYMERS AND CAPSULES FOR MODIFICATION OF CELLULOSE FIBRES AND PAPER PRODUCTS

The cationic polymers used in papermaking conventionally are often quarternary ammonium-based, which appear to be limited in introducing versatile functions apart from retention improvement. To further enhance the performance of polymeric additives for fibre modification and specialty papers, we have developed various systems based on guanidine polymers, poly(vinyl alcohol) or vinyl-acetate copolymers, cyclodextrin-based star or branched cationic polymers as well as the complexes originating from those polymers. Both in-situ grafting polymerization and atom transfer free-radical polymerization (ATRP) have been utilized. The structure-property relations for the functional polymers above have been established by comprehensive characterizations using a variety of state-of-art techniques, such as AFM, SEM, TGA and 2-D NMR. The synergetic effect of polymers on improving the strength and functionality of end paper products were revealed; and the corresponding mechanisms were also explored. Moreover, the cationic-modified nano- capsules (cyclodextrin) were used as carriers to include functional agents (e.g., antibiotics), thus creating novel specialty papers (hygiene paper in particular) for various applications. To elucidate the mechanism and assess the performance of as-prepared functional capsules, XRD, UV, TEM and DDJ were used to reveal the structures of functional fillers and dynamically monitor the release of antibiotics. The antimicrobial testing demonstrated the excellences of the cellulose fibres or fibre networks bearing such functional capsules against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The mechanism of pathogen deactivation was further identified with AFM and confocal fluorescent laser microscopy.
