CURRENT STATUS AND CHALLENGES OF THE JAPANESE PAPER INDUSTRY
The Japanese paper industry produces 30 million tons of paper and paperboard every year. The industry expanded its production by establishing a unique system of importing chips from aboard, which were pulped and then were made into sheets in integrated mills. But, the domestic market is now saturated and the industry has to be international. So, it is necessary to develop products internationally competitive. At the same time, the industry has to satisfy Japanese customers who demand quality specific in Japan. To deal with, the industry should make challenges such as production overseas, technologies enabling high quality and high efficiency, securing fiber sources and efforts for environment conservation like energy saving and resource recycling society.
