STUDY ON IMPROVING WET END CHEMICALS ADSORPTION IN BCTMP BY LHCS PRETREATMENT
In this study, a specially designed starch-based fixing agent, i.e., a low-molecular-weighted highly cationic starch (LHCS) was used to pre-treat a bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (BCTMP), and how the pretreatment influences the adsorptions of some representative wet-end additives, such as fluorescent whitening agent, tinting dye, PAE wet strengthening agent, cationic starch dry strength agent, AKD sizing agent and CPAM retention agent, onto the BCTMP fibers, were investigated, using UV-visible spectroscopic methods which were also developed in our previous studies. The results show that the adsorbed amounts and the adsorption efficiencies of the above chemical aids can be improved by the LHCS pretreatment to different degrees. The improved adsorptions were found to improve their corresponding functional or process properties, such as higher brightness, better tinting, higher wet and dry strengths, better sizing, and higher retention and drainage.
