RESEARCH OF UPGRADING SECOND FIBER USING GRAFTED STARCH MULTI-COMPONENT COPOLYMER
A multi-component copolymer was prepared by reaction of starch with acrylic acid and acrylamide. The resulting copolymer was characterized by IR. Because of its special structure, while the synthesized product was treated with second fiber, the closed irreversibly small cavities and pores on fiber surface would be opened again through the swelling of grafted starch multi-component copolymer itself, and then swelling capacity of fiber had almost reached the original level and the interfiber bonding had been improved consequently. The performance on the strength enhancement of recycled fiber hand-sheet was investigated as well. Burst, tear and tensile strength increased 20.7%, 34.9% and 27.3%, respectively, when the addition of synthesized product was 0.9% for recycled softwood pulp. In addition, burst, tear and tensile strength increased 36.0%, 19.0% and 18.9%, respectively, when the addition of synthesized product was 0.7% for recycled hardwood pulp.
