ELIMINATION OF PITCH SUBSTANCES FROM PAPER FURNISHES BY MAGNESIUM ALUMINUM HYDROXIDES
Magnesium aluminum hydroxides are typical layered double hydroxides (LDH), and can be transformed into calcined layered double oxides (LDO) by thermal treatment. LDH and LDO with a Mg/Al molar ratio of 3:1 and NO3 - as gallery anions show highest absorption capacity for model pitch while LDO has a higher adsorption capacity than LDH, and gets its maximum adsorption capacity as it is calcined at 550 oC. LDO can be reconstructed into LDH as it adsorbs model pitch, and has a very good removing effect on pitch in either presence or absence of fiber. It can be recovered by calcination and reused to remove pitch as a recyclable adsorption material.
