PRELIMINARY STUDY ON CORRUGATED MEDIUM BY USING BLAST FURNACE SLAG FIBER

In this paper, corrugated medium with blast furnace slag (BFS) fiber by taking part of old paper pulp was studied. The fiber morphology of BFS fiber was observed firstly, and then the fiber length and width were determined. The results showed that cylindrically shaped BFS fiber has adequate strength and toughness to some extent but is more fragile. The average length of BFS fibers was 1.84cm and the average width was 3.76μm. The distribution of length and width was even. The effect of different ratio of BFS fiber to old paper stock on the properties of corrugated medium was studied. The result showed that with the proportion of BFS fiber increasing, the weight and the physical strengths of handsheet expressed the tendency of decline. It indicated that the bonding ability between BFS fiber and old paper fiber was insufficient. Therefore reinforcing agent was necessary when BFS fibers were used for papermaking. On the basis of 20% BFS fibers, strengthening agents such as CPAM, cationic starch and anion starch were used to improve the physical properties of hand sheets. Results showed that when CPAM charge was 0.2%, cationic starch charge was 0.8%, and anion starch charge was 1.2%, physical properties of hand sheets were close to that of control (without BFS fiber and additive). It could meet the corresponding national standard of corrugated medium.
