PREPARATION OF NANO-TiO2 STABILIZED ASA EMULSION AND ITS SIZING BEHAVIOR ON BCTMP
With the extensive use of mechanical pulp in paper manufacture, ASA will be employed more widely as a highly efficient sizing agent since it is more tolerant than AKD for aluminum salt added as an economic anionic trash catcher. However, the emulsification of ASA still has much work to do in order to improve the sizing efficiency and reduce input of emulsifiers. This paper reports, for the first time, the preparation of nano-TiO2 stabilized ASA emulsion as well as its sizing performance and hydrolysis stability. The oil-in-water emulsions of ASA stabilized by nano-TiO2 have a rather low viscosity and adequately small droplet size at considerably high concentration, and show high sizing efficiency on BCTMP, yet low hydrolysis stability. The droplet size can be controlled by adjusting the amount of the nano-TiO2. Emulsions with smaller particle size show higher sizing performance, yet the free nano-TiO2 particles in water phase hurt the sizing effects of ASA emulsions.
