STUDIES ON USING CALCIUM CARBONATE WHISKERS AS PAPERMAKING FILLERS

Whiskers, with a large length/diameter ratio, are fiber-shaped single crystals. The technical possibility of using calcium carbonate whiskers as papermaking fillers to replace conventional powder-like PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) was investigated. The results showed that it is feasible for using calcium carbonate whiskers as papermaking fillers. Compared with conventional powder-like particles, calcium carbonate whiskers have higher retention. And also it is favorable for improving the physical strength of paper when calcium carbonate whiskers are used as papermaking fillers. A model was proposed based on SEM, SEM-EDAX and zero/short span tensile test data to suggest the mechanism of paper strength improvement. The whiskers filled in sheets can increase the friction between fibers, thus increasing bonding strength. In addition, the physical strength is further improved because the pods of calcium carbonate whiskers are partly embedded in fiber walls.
