STUDY ON ENZYMATIC REFINING OF UNBLEACHED SOFTWOOD KRAFT PULP AND ITS WET END CHEMICAL CHARATERISTICS

An unbleached softwood kraft pulp pre-treated by hemicellulase BIO-RE100 was refined with a PFI mill, and the effect of enzymatic refining on the wet end chemical characteristics of the pulp was investigated in this paper. The optimum conditions for enzymatic refining were found out. The beatability, fiber characteristics, the power consumption of enzymatic refining, and paper strength properties of the enzymatic refined pulps under the optimum conditions were also evaluated. The results showed that the optimum conditions for enzymatic refining are as follows: temperature 45 , enzyme dosage 1,000g/t, pH 6, time ℃ 60min. Under the optimum conditions, the power consumption of enzymatic refining would drop by 33% and the pulp property could be improved. The results also showed that enzymatic refining could result in decreasing the electrical conductivity and improving drainage rate of the pulp. Studies were also conducted with electron microscope scanning. The results indicated that the enzymatic refined unbleached softwood kraft pulp has larger specific surface area, more uncovering of the fiber surface, more fibrillation and less cutting of the pulp fiber compared with the control pulp.
