INVESTIGATION ON THE PREPARATION OF AUTOMOBILE BASE FILTER PAPER

In this study, using softwood kraft pulp, hardwood kraft pulp, mercerized softwood kraft pulp, mechanochemical pulp, modified fibers, and synthetic fibers as raw materials, the preparation of automobile base filter paper was investigated. The effects of raw material processing and different combinations of materials on density, air permeability, and bursting strength were discussed, and the underlying mechanisms were speculated. Softwood kraft pulp, with air permeability of the base paper of less than 120 L/m2·s, and average pore size of 25μm to 45μm, was found to be much contributable to paper strength, but its contribution to air permeability was very limited. The use of mercerized softwood kraft pulp with average pore size of the base paper 66 to 73 μm, and air permeability of more than 900L/m2·s significantly improved the paper air permeability, while maintaining the paper strength. Also, modified fibers (with average pore size of the base paper less than 25μm, and air permeability of less than 100L/m2·s) and synthetic fibers (with average pore size of the base paper of 40 to 55 μm, and air permeability of less than 150L/m2·s) were found to be useful for air permeability improvement, and hardwood kraft pulp and mechanochemical pulp could provide pore size adjustment to fine tune paper air permeability. By controlling the relevant parameters, the preparation of automobile base filter papers with varied performances (i.e., paper air permeability of 300L/m2·s to 1200 L/m2·s, average pore size of 40μm to 80μm, and paper density of less than 0.26g/cm3) is feasible.
