EFFECT OF TYPES AND ADDING METHODS OF FLUORESENT WHITENING AGENT ON PAPER WHITENING EFFICIENCY
Compared adding fluorescent whitening agent (FWA) in the pulp and in surface sizing, the whitening efficiency of solid whiteners VBL, BA and liquid whiteners APC, 210 on paper was studied. The results showed that the whitening efficiency of paper was different as the adding of FWA with different types, dosages and methods. The problems of brightness decreasing and yellowing appeared after adding excessive FWA. By adding in the pulp, the optimum dosages (compared to oven-dry stock) of VBL, BA, APC and 210 were 0.3%, 0.35%, 1.1% and 0.9% respectively. In surface sizing with starch, the optimum dosages (compared to the starch) of VBL, BA, APC and 210 were 1.5%, 1.5%, 2.5% and 2.0% respectively. Compared to the different types and adding methods, the effects of adding BA and APC were better than VBL and 210 in the pulp. But the effects were opposite in surface sizing. Meanwhile, the hue analysis showed that colorimetric data a* and │b*│ were increased so that the hue of paper was changed from yellow-green to red-blue, which made the paper look whiter by adding FWA.
