NOVEL RETENTION SYSTEM BASED ON AMPHOTERIC GUAR GUM GRAFTING COPOLYMER
To render guar gum amphoteric, both anionic groups (-COO-) and cationic (quaternary) (N+ (CH3)3) groups were introduced or grafted onto the polysaccharide backbone which induced excellent retention performances in deinked recycled pulp furnish containing a significant amount of electrolytes. The similar performance was unachievable with conventional cationic guar gum. The amphoteric guar gum(AC-GG) with high molecular weight (MW) had strong impact on improving the retention whereas the one with low MW tended to enhance the mechanical properties of hand-sheets made up of the recycled fibres.
