STUDY ON HALF-DRY PREPARATION OF AMPHOTERIC GUAR GUM AND ITS APPLICATION IN PAPERMAKING AS STRENGTH AID

Carboxyl methyl amphoteric guar gum with high degree of substitution was synthesized by half-dry process in the same reactor with guar gum, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride and sodium chloroacetate as material, ethanol aqueous solution as medium, without need of dividing intermediate cationic product. In order to obtain the optimum process condition and develop a repeatable and cost-effective procedure, the effects of some factors, such as dosage of etherifying agent, reaction temperature, reaction time on reaction efficiency, and degree of substitution were studied. And the structural properties of the product were characterized and analyzed by FT-IR and SEM. The strengthening effect of amphoteric guar gum on different pulp was studied. The results showed that the optimum conditions were obtained as follows: water content of 30%, EPTAC of 25%, sodium chloroacetate of 15%, cationic modification temperature of 75 , reaction time of 4.5h, ℃ anionic modification temperature of 75 , ℃ and reaction time of 5h. The sample′s cationic degree of substitution is 0.274, and anionic degree of substitution is 0.063. The reaction between the modifier and guar gum occurred both on the surface and in the interior. Compared with the control one, breaking length, folding strength, burst index and tear index increased by 13.3%,70%,17.5% and 10.1%.
