PCC MODIFICATION WITH STARCH AND ITS APPLICATION IN PAPERMAKING PROCESS

This paper introduces the whole process of PCC modification with starch and the application of modified PCC in papermaking process. We mixed the PCC filler with starch at moderate solid content (5%-40%) and then cooked the mixture. The moisture content, dosage of starch, cooking temperature and time play an important role in the filler modification process. It was found that the preferable modification conditions are as follows: cooking temperature is 95 ~105℃; solid content is 28%; cooking time is 45 minutes. The modified PCC obtained under these conditions had considerable good properties regarding the handsheet investigation. The physical handsheet properties, including tensile strength, tearing strength, folding endurance, and opacity, had superior properties with starch-modified PCC compared with non-modified PCC addition. The negative effects of modified PCC filler addition on the physical properties were less than unmodified PCC filler addition. The modified PCC can also enhance paper brightness, but it is slightly weaker than non-modified PCC. When using this modified filler in papermaking, the retention of filler increased greatly with less sacrifice of paper strength properties, which means that more fillers can be added and less papermaking cost can be obtained.
