APPLICATION OF FLUORESCENT WHITENING AGENT WITH INORGANIC YELLOWING INHIBITORS AGAINST LIGHT-INDUCED COLOUR REVERSION OF HYP-CONTAINING PAPER SHEETS

In recent years, High Yield Pulp (HYP) with its unique properties has found increasing applications in many value-added paper grades. However, one of the main drawbacks that limit its more extensive applications is the photo yellowing tendency due to its high lignin content. In this paper, the 4-sulfonic type of fluorescent whitening agent (FWA) was used as a stabilizer with inorganic yellowing inhibitors, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, for aspen BCTMP during the surface sizing operation. The results show that the FWA combined with inorganic yellowing inhibitors has a good effect on stabilizing the brightness of HYP in surface application, especially for the nano-grade ZnO and TiO2. The synergistic effect of FWA and nano-grade ZnO can be obtained in retarding the photo-yellowing of HYP. The HYP brightness decreased slightly after 4-hour UV light irradiation.
