ENZYMATIC TREATMENT OF KRAFT PULP TO FACILITATE REFINING
A recombinant V. volvacea endoglucanase I (EG1) and a xylanase from B. acidocaldarius were used to treat bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp and pine kraft pulp prior to refining, and the effects on refinability and strength properties of pulp were evaluated. The results indicated that under the optimum conditions, the use of three kinds of enzyme can improve the beatability of pulp as measured by Schopper Riegler value. EG1 was most effective in improving the refining response, the energy consumption of hardwood and softwood were reduced around 38% and 47% at 0.3IU/ml and 0.5IU/ml EG1 dosages for 2 hours respectively. Tensile strength of the pulps slightly improving, however, the tear index was impaired significantly under the same conditions. Treatments with xylanase also appeared to facilitate refining.
