HIGHLY CATIONIC STARCH IN CONTROLLING POLYSACCHARIDE-BASED ANIONIC TRASHES AND RESIN AND FATTY ACIDS IN PAPERMAKING

In this study, a newly developed starch-based fixing agent named as LHCS was compared with a more traditional cost-effective fixing agent polyamine by applying them to two model systems. One was a polysaccharide-based anionic trash system represented by pectin, oxidized starch and degraded hemicellulose, and the other was a model pitch mixture by abietic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid and methyl stearate. The results show that the LHCS has better effects both on controlling the polysaccharide-based anionic trashes and on the resin and fatty acids (RFAs). The reasons were ascribed respectively to hydrogen bonding between the LHCS and the polysaccharide-based anionic trashes, and the possible complex formation between the LHCS and the RFAs.
