IMPROVING STRENGTH OF UNBLEACHED SOFTWOOD KRAFT PULP WITH LACCASE AND GELATIN
Although many researchers focused on gelatin and improving the strength of the paper, most of their approaches was limited to simply adding the gelatin to pulp. Our experiments proved that gelatin could significantly improve the wet and dry strength of paper with the assistance of the laccase. Dry and wet strength of pulp which was treated by laccase increased little, especially the dry strength. This shows that the enzyme treatment for the improvement of the strength of paper is limited. Gelatin can increase wet and dry strength of paper significantly, in particular the tensile index and burst index. If the unbleached pulp was treated gelatin with laccase in existence of laccase, dry and wet strength of paper was further increased. These results showed that laccase together with gelatin could effectively improve the strength of the paper. In addition, effect of the enzyme treatment conditions and the gelatin content on the strength of the paper were discussed. According to the results of laboratory experiments, the optimal conditions were as follows: room temperature: 25℃; time: 5 h; gelatin dosage: 2% on pulp (O.D.); pH value: 6; laccase dosage of 50U/g.
