SYNTHESIS OF THREE-COMPONENT STARCH-BASED COPOLYMER USED IN SECOND FIBER

In this paper, a three-member starch based copolymer (TSC) was prepared by grafting acrylamide and methyl acrylyl ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) on the backbone of natural starch. The polymerization conditions, such as consumption of monomer, initiator, polymerizing temperature and reaction time were investigated and the optimal reaction conditions were obtained. The optimal conditions were: mass ratio of starch/acrylamide/DMC 4.5:4:3, the dosage of initiator 0.3%, reaction temperate 65 ℃ , reaction time 3 h, reactant concentration 0.25g/mL. The resulting copolymer was characterized by IR. Strength of paper sheet from recycled fiber was improved significantly. For example, the tensile strength was increased up to 87.5%, the burst strength increased nearly twice and the tear strength to 18.8% when synthesized copolymer was applied and the synthesized product addition was 0.8%, tear strength was 70% and addition 1.4%. The results showed that the property of fiber itself could be improved, which increased potential of second fiber for papermaking.
