SODIUM ALGINATE STABILIZED ASA EMULSIONS: PREPARATION AND SIZING PERFORMANCE

Traditional ASA sizing agent is typically emulsified in situ with cationic starches, which require extra equipment and procedure for cooking. Sodium alginate, characterized by abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups as well as structural similarity with cellulose, can be dissolved in cold water and is a potential stabilizer and sizing promoter of ASA emulsions. In this paper, the emulsifying effects of sodium alginate with different molecular weight on ASA and the sizing performance of the resulting sodium alginate stabilized ASA emulsions were investigated. Results show that the sodium alginate is a competent stabilizer for ASA emulsion. ASA emulsions stabilized by sodium alginate with lower molecular weight have higher stability while those stabilized by sodium alginate with higher molecular weight show better sizing performance, especially as the ASA emulsion is just prepared. Stable ASA-in-water emulsions can be prepared using alginate with a molecular weight of 1.314×104 as stabilizer at a charge level of 0.25%. The obtained ASA emulsions have a rather small mean droplet diameter, high stability, and a similar sizing efficiency to anionic starch stabilized one. Moreover, the introduction of aluminum sulfate can significantly improve the sizing efficiency of the ASA emulsion stabilized by alginate, which shows a much higher sizing efficiency than the anionic starch stabilized one.
