INFLUENCE OF FILLING ON PRINTABILITY OF RECYCLED FIBER NEWSPRINT

A comparative study on the influence of four kinds of filler, such as talc, kaolinite, CaCO3 No.1 and CaCO3 No.2 on the printability of newsprint from recycled fiber was carried out. The results showed that the appropriate dosages of talc, kaolinite, CaCO3 No.1 and CaCO3 No.2 were 5%, 8%, 8% and 10% respectively. The composition and particle size of the two kinds of CaCO3 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Laser particle size analysis. The results indicated that CaCO3 No.1 and CaCO3 No.2 were all calcite structure. And particle size distribution of CaCO3 No.2 was narrower than CaCO3 No.1. The average size of CaCO3 No.2 was smaller as well which ranged from 1.3μm to 2.5μm. It was found that CaCO3 No.2 had a better effect on printability of recycled fiber newsprint than talc, kaolinite, and CaCO3 No.2. After adding 10% of CaCO3 No.2, the whiteness of paper was raised by 11.2%, smoothness by 50.0%, light scattering coefficient by 42.4%, ink absorbability by 13.4%, while the breaking length and tearing index were reduced by 3.6% and 20.3% respectively with degree of linting and dusting not obvious. It reduced the two-sidedness which filled 10% dosage of CaCO3 No.2. The Z direction structure which filled CaCO3 No.2 became more compact and the layers of paper became more level. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) of paper confirmed that.
