Pitfalls and Strategy in New Product Development Process
The most important strategic decision that any business firm makes involves the development of new products and services to meet customer demand in both domestic and intemational marketplaces.In fact, strategies about what new products to offer to customers and how to position them in the marketrIlace often determine the ultimate growth,profitability,and success of the firm.However,high failure rates of new product development projects not only impede progress of business firms,but also squander scarce resources in terms of money,human power and time.This paper analyzes the causes of new product development failures based on the study results of statistical data from surveys conducted by Chinese university scholars. In order to reduce possible risks during new product development process,a well-defined strategy,known as “cautious at the first half,fast at the second,is conceived and analyzed in this paper.
