MITIGATION OF VAPOUR CLOUD EXPLOSIONS BY INHIBITORS

Vapor Cloud Explosions occurred in all parts of the world and since several decades. These types of accidental events have shown to be very devastating. People have lost their lives and petrochemical plants have been completely destroyed. Total is investigating a novel technique to mitigate the potential consequences of vapor cloud explosions. A worldwide patent is pending (WO2010/010044 Al). By injecting an inhibitor in a flammable cloud, the overpressures upon ignition can be decreased by a factor 10 to 100. This article describes experiments done at SOTRA in August-October 2009.
