SAFETY EVALUATION ON CNG VEHICLE FUEL CYLINDERS WITH EXTERNAL DAMAGED COMPOSITE
There have taken high possession of being caused by the external damaged composite out of CNG vehicles accidents related to fuel cylinders since 2005 in Korea. The accidents due to high pressure cylinders inflict a serious loss in comparison with other similar gas troubles like leakage, moreover, there will be able to bring about a loss of passengers lives taking usually the CNG bus.To protect the severe damage, the fuel supply system of CNG vehicles, especially, cylinders need to continuously improve maintenance and safety evaluation.Actually, in case of damaging the external composite of CNG fuel cylinders, inspectors in the field decide each damage Level such as Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 in accordance with some standards, ISO 19078, CGA C6.4, and KGS C017. However, they appeal to be very hard to suitably determine damage levels whether the damaged cylinder can be available more or not. Therefore, CNG fuel cylinders which have damage length, depth, and width on the composite surface, especially Type 2 and Type 3, were tested on the condition of an ambient cycling test to analyze cylinders fatigue life. For the composite material of cylinders, interlaminar shear stress test and the tensile strength test were carried out in order to build up basis data for obtaining the safety of CNG fuel cylinders.
