VAPOR CLOUD EXPLOSION MECHANISMS AND MITIGATION

The severity of vapor cloud explosions depends on a range of different parameters. Some of the most important factors include the properties of the flammable cloud, such as: reactivity and flammability range of the fuel, shape and volume of the vapor cloud, and homogeneity of the fuel mixture, Whether the flammable cloud is in the vapor or condensed phase (aerosols), the composition (singie-or multi-component) may also have an impact on the explosion. Furthermore, the geometry layout of the facility is of extreme importance, particularly the congestion level and confinement. Other parameters like ignition location and pre-ignition turbulence can have a significant impact on the explosion. In order to find the optimal way to mitigate explosion risk, it is important to understand the controlling mechanisms. The proposed paper will discuss various mechanisms that influence the strength of an explosion, using examples from explosion experiments and CFD-modeling The experiments will include GexCon and Advantica (GL) large-scale explosion tests. Discussion of previous major accidents like Buncefield explosion, UK, and Danvers explosion, MA, will also be included.
