A STUDY ON INCOMBUSTIBILITY OF AN ECO-FRIEDNLY WOOD FIRE DOOR

Urban development has increased number of high-rise buildings as well as danger of fires. Therefore, more researches on structure fire and evacuation are underway. Fire doors are installed in hallways of fire compartments to isolate fire and smokes from spreading. This research has evaluated performances of paper honeycomb and wood that will be used for eco-friendly wood fire doors based on their retardant treatment. For honeycomb specimen, honeycomb specimen created in a lab, honeycomb specimen with fire retardant film, honeycomb specimen impregnated with flame retardant, and honeycomb specimen made with flame retardant paper honeycomb covered with fire retardant after impregnating with flame retardant were prepared. For wood specimen, regular wood specimen, specimen impregnated for 1 hour, specimen impregnated for 25 hours, specimen impregnated for 70 hours, specimen impregnated for 10 minutes in vacuum, and specimen impregnated for 30 minutes in vacuum were prepared. After the paper honeycomb test, the fire retardant film delayed the ignition time, flame retardant treated honeycomb did not ignite, specimen with flame retardant film ignited, resulting a negative effect that increase overall heat release rate. The vacuum impregnation method was proved to be effective in increasing flame retardation for wood, while regular impregnated water proof plywood showed low heat release. It has been shown that the vacuum impregnation has the lowest heat release.
