STUDY ON OIL AND GAS PIPELINE CRACK DETECTION METHOD BASED ON EMAT-GENERATED ULTRASONIC GUIDED WAVES
The cracks in the walk of oil and gas pipelines pose a potential threat to these pipelines normal and safe operation, so they must be detected to guide pipeline maintenance and ensure pipeline integrity. This paper presents the research to detect the cracks in the pipe wall using axial ultrasonic guided waves generated by electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs). An alternating winding magnetostrictive EMAT is developed first, and then used in crack detection experiments. The results show that EMAT-generated ultrasonic guided waves can effectively detect the circumferentially distributed cracks in the pipe wall, and it is a promising non-destructive testing method for pipeline crack detection.
