A REVIEW OF PERMAFROST ISSUES IN PIPELINE INTEGRITY
Oil and gas pipelines in permafrost terrain are subject to numerous geothermal and gpotechnical hazards that are unique to that environment. Issues such as frost heave, thaw settlement, thawing slopes, and upheaval buckling are potential hazards that could impact the integrity of the pipeline. This paper discusses the processes for identifying problematic terrain, how the normal pipeline de-sign process should be altered to address permafrost geohazards, the application of strain based pipeline design as a means for addressing these hazards, and how mitigation and monitoring forms a integral part of the design process.
