INTERPRETATION OF BAND-TYPED INDICATION ON RADIOGRAPHY ON 9% NI STEEL WELDS FOR LNG STORAGE TANKS

9% nickel alloy steels that are used for LNG, cryogenic liquid, storage tank are welded by dissimilar materials as the Inconell and Hasteloy welding rod. The wekhnent and the parent metal of 9% nickel alloy steels have similar characteristic with the austenite stainless steels. Several types of unidentified indications on the films of radiography appeared. Comparing the micro structures of austenite stainless steel with 9% Ni alloy steel, and mechanical test, UT(uitrasonic test) and PT(penetration test) were performed to identify the band-typed false indications. It is concluded that the coarse grains of metals and X-ray diffraction are the sources of these indications. Finally we suggest an interpretation guideline of band type indications as false indications.
