The Use of B2B Electronic Marketplaces: A Supplier Perspective

This research answers the question of what determines the extent of B2B electronic marketplace (EM) use by suppliers, and its accrued benefits from EMs. A research framework based on transaction cost theory and resource based view is proposed. The framework suggests that a supplier use of EMs is determined by its perceived transaction cost, which is in turn determined by the characteristics of products (complexity of product description and asset specificity),and the suppliers organizational capability (flexible manufacturing and online marketing capability). This research suggests that although transaction cost factors constrain firms use of B2B EMs,suppliers with higher capability will perceive product characteristics a less constraint of their EM use.
