The Influence of Knowledge Gap between Vendor and Client on Knowledge Transfer in IT Service Outsourcing
Knowledge transfer in IT service outsourcing is receiving much attention in both academic and practical areas; many studies have explored the factors which affect knowledge transfer. Although some studies regard knowledge gap between vendors and clients as an antecedent of effective knowledge transfer, knowledge gap has seldomly been focused on and yet no complete theoretical model about it has been constructed. In this paper,we provide a definition of knowledge gap in the IT service outsurcing context Then a conceptual framework based on relational view and synergy effect theory is put forward which clearly elaborates the mechanism how knowledge gap influences the knowledge transfer from clients to vendors. In our conceptual model, the relationship between knowledge gap and knowledge transfer performance takes the form of an inverted U-shape. Besides, absorptive capabilities, knowledge transfer mechanisms and relationship quality are considered to have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between knowledge gap and knowledge transfer performance.
