The Integrative Production of the Paper Map and the Geographic Information Data

The geographic information data production and the paper map production are two main tasks of digital mapping. Each has a special workflow in practical cartographic production. In this paper, the integrative workflow for producing the paper map and geographic information data was discussed. The paper was consisted of three parts. Firstly, the different request between the paper map production and geographic information data production was analysed. Secondly, two workflows were compared. The workflow of paper map production includes the map design, multi-source data use, map symbolization, map editing, data checking, the colour proof printing, and element processing for publication. The workflow of geographic information data production consists of the geometry position capturing, geo-attribute acquisition and the topological relationship building. The paper map production and the geographic information production could be gone on in one workflow if the process of geo-attribute acquisition and the topological relationship building was added in the workflow of the paper map production. Finally, three problems should be resolved in the integrative workflow. The first was to design the data structure of operation object, the second was to research the relationship of the feature geo-attribute and map symbol, and the third was to use the attribute database keeping the geo-attribute. The digital mapping system based on the integrative workflow was developed. It could change single-production mode into multi-production mode.
