Cryptanalysis of MD5 on GPU Cluster
MD5 password recovery is an inverse problem which has a large computational complexity because MD5 is a one-way hash function, making implementations on common computing systems become less practical. In this paper, we present an approach using a cluster of modern multi-core graphic processing units (CPU Cluster) as computing devices for recovering lost passwords of MD5. Our program was performed on a cluster of two nodes, one node is equipped with a dual graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295, a Tesla C1060 card and a node includes two dual graphics cards NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295. The experimental results have shown that the password checking speed is about 806.2 to 918.4 millions hashes per second, increasing from 575 to 639 times compared to CPU-based programs on the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66 GHz. These results have demonstrated the potential applicability of GPU Cluster in the cryptanalysis field.
