A Corpus-aided Analysis of Translators Style: A Case Study of Classical Chinese Poetry Translation
Classical Chinese Poetry (CCP) is a brilliant gem of Chinese literature and has enchanted both Chinese and Western readers with its unique beauty. Translation of CCP, as an approach of cultural exchange, has played an indispensable role in introducing Chinese culture to the outside world in an era of globalization. Translators style is an important indicator of quality of a translated literary work. It has remained a hot topic of research in literary translation criticism. To evaluate the quality of CCP translation in both qualitative and quantitative manners, a prototype of a CCP Corpus is developed on the basis of computational linguistics and relational database technology. The prototype integrates the relational data model and XML to organize the semi-structured documents of CCP and its translation, and is efficient in retrieving and analyzing data. By making use of this prototype and taking Professor Xu Yuanchongs translation of CCP as a case, the translators style is investigated in details on the lexical, syntactical and textual levels. The findings indicate that Xus translation is easily understandable and that he has made great efforts to retain the beauty of meaning, form and sound of CCP in his translation.
