Design and Simulation of Coordinated Ramp Control System

The coordinated ramp control depending on the traffic conditions in the whole freeway system rather than the local conditions around independent on-ramps has gained the most respect to ameliorate the freeway traffic situation. In this work, a hierarchy control strategy for the coordinated ramp control is proposed. The second-order model to describe the evolution of freeway traffic flow is firstly established. Then the coordinated ramp control system is designed. The control system is vertically decomposed into three layers, that is, an adaptation layer, a coordination control layer and a direct control layer. The task and the characteristic of each layer are formulated in detail. Finally, simulation for the control system is implemented to illustrate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed control method. This control system is of good performance. It can achieve a desired traffic density along the freeway mainline, and thus avoid traffic jams.
