An Eco-hydrology Model to Determine Environmental Flows for Estuaries Based on Key Ecological Objectives of Critical Habitat

Considering the complex relationship between the flow alteration and ecosystem response in estuaries, also on the basis of key ecological objectives of critical habitat, we develop an eco-hydrology model to determine environmental flows in estuaries. This model, which is problem-solving, establishes the relationship between ecological objectives and freshwater inflows by identifying key ecological factors of critical habitats in estuaries. The eco-hydrology model contains two components: one is the ecological objective for critical habitat, the other is the response model which further contains a hydrodynamic model and a salinity modeL The ecohydrology model is applied in the Yangtze River Estuary and Yellow River Estuary. Results indicate that it is indeed an effective tool to determine environmental flows for estuaries. Furthermore, field monitoring and adaptive management are necessary in the future research of the environmental flow assessment.
