Numerical Simulation to Study Effects of Structural Parameters on the Filtration Performance of the Multi-Iayer Fibrous Filter Media
Two-dimensional multi-layer fibrous filter media have been established by combining Matlab program and journal file in preprocessing software, Gambit in this study. The filtration characteristics of the multi-layer fibrous filter media with different fiber diameter and solid volume fraction (SVF) distributions along the flow direction were simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology, and the predicted results were compared with the values of theoretical models. The resujts indicate that utilization of the modeling method proposed in this study can obtain a fibrous filter medium that is similar to the actual one. The predicted values of the pressure drop are in excellent agreement with the experimental correlation, and the predicted values of the filtration efficiencies show a similar tendency as the theoretical models. In addition, the fiber diameter and SVF are important structural parameters of the multi-layer fibrous filter media, and the media with increased fiber diameter and SVF along the flow direction can obtain good filtration performance.
