Strong Effluent Treatment to Produce Lactic Acid and Hydrogen

A strong wastewater is a resource that may be harnessed to produce various chemicals and energy in the form of hydrogen (H2) or methane (CH4). The chemicals are usually in the form of various fatty acids. Strong wastewaters may come from various sources in the form of industrial wastewaters as well as sludge streams from activated sludge type of wastewater treatment processes. Their CODs may range from even as low as 5 g/L to as high as 50 g/L. The chemicals obtained have the potential to be utilized in various industrial applications. Lactic acid (LA) has the potential to be polymerized into polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable plastic. Palm oil mill effluent (POME), an example of a strong effluent. is a byproduct of the palm od industry witb COD of about 40g/L. Anaerobic treatment or fermentation of POME to yield LA and H2 was carried out at several hydraulic retention times (HRTs), using inoculum from a sewage sludge fermentation plant. Data from two HRTs (4 and 6 days) were used to obtain kinetics data for both chemical production and biomass growth. From the studies, HRT of 4 days could produce a biogas which is 20% H2 at a yield of 0.045LH2/gCOD. The growth kinetics data obtained were yield constant Ys, of 0.2157 mg SS/mgCOD, endogenous decay coefficient Kd, of 0.031/day, maximum specific growth rate, μm , of 0.134/day and half saturation constant, Ks , of 391 mgCOD/l. The bacterial isolates obtained tbrough gram staining include Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium, actinomyces, Clostridium spp. and Peptococcus spp. In this preliminary study, the highest hydrogen yield obtained was 20% volume at HRT 4 days and influent pH of 7 with effluent pH of 5.3, while that for lactic acid was 5.35 g LA per day at HRT 6 days and effluent pH of 5.8.
