A Numerical Model Study on the Ecological Impacts of Coastal Reclamation in Bohai Bay
In recent years, Bohai Bay has suffered serious ecojogical degradations. In this paper, a numerical model was set up to simulate the dynamics of the plankton ecosystem of Bohai Bay and to estimate the potential effects of a sea reclamation project in this area. The model used herein is a coupled eco-hydrodynamic modeJ which is composed of a bydrodynamic sub-model and an ecological sub-model and is capable of simulations of basic biogeochemical cyclings of dissolved nitrogen (DIN), dissolved phosphorus (DIP), phytoplankton (PPT) and zooplankton (ZPT) under advection, dispersion and ecological processes. The model has been calibrated and verified by using field data. The study predicted significant variations in the concentration distributions of phytoplankton and nutnents in areas surrounding the project after the reclamation_ Increase in phytoplankton and nutrients levels iri the northern and southern areas were observed which might indicate an increase in the risk of eutrophication and algae blooms. The results of the analysis provided important information for the project and eco-environmental management.
