Quasar Spectroscopy: Absorption Lines in the Quasar Spectra
Absorption lines seen in the spectra of QSOs have proved to be a very sensitive and powerful tool in understanding the evolutionary history of the universe. They have enabled us to observe, indirectly, galaxies and intergalactic matter at large distance8, which are virtually inaccessible otherwise, and have provided a means to observationally verify the predictions of theoretical models of structure formation and evolution. Here, I will briefly introduce the subject and will describe some of the recent results, including the chemical enrichment history of the universe, amount and nature of dust in the absorbers, implications of the absorption line studies for the nature of the absorbing galaxies, outflows from the QS0s, and understanding the evolution of (i) the temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation and (ii) the fine structure constant.
