Reconnection in the Solar and Terrestrial Environments

We focus on the morphological features of magnetic reconnection in two different environments, the solar atmosphere and the geomagnetic tail. Comparing of the reconnection process in the two environments reveals both similarities and differ ences. We noticed that most of the differences lie mainly in the absolute values of the length scale, magnetic field strength, the rate of reconnection, and the corresponding amount of the energy converted in the progress. Formation and development of the reconnection region, namely the current sheet, in the two environments are also dif ferent from each other. The similarities are shown in the characteristic values, such as Alfvén speed, plasmaβ, and the relative rate of reconnection, and in the morphologi cal features around and inside the current sheet. This comparative study is meant as a contribution to current efforts aimed at isolating similarities in processes occurring in very different contexts in the heliosphere, and even in the universe.
