Infrared Observations of Interstellar Dust by AKARI
The Japanese infrared satellite AKARlwas launched on 2006 February 22 (JST). It completed far-infrared A11-Sky Survey covering about 94% of the entire sky and also carried out mid-infrared Al1-Sky Survey during the life time of 550 days until it ran out the liquid Helium on 2007 August 26. The AKARI Al1-Sky Survey will provide us new infrared source catalogs, which will surpass the IRAS catalogs with higher spatial resolution and wider spectral coverage ranging up to 180pm. AKARI also have a capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the pointed observation mode. Especially, its spectroscopic abilities in the near- to mid-infrared as well as its multi band photometric abilities covering widely from near- to far-infrared are quite valuable to investigate the properties of the interstellar dust. Challenges toward understanding the formation process and the physical and chemical evolution scenarios of interstellar dust are of great importance in the present days infrared astronomy. In this sense, a large number of near- to far-infrared datasets collected by AKARI are expected to make a significant contribution toward unveiling this topic and will surely deepen our knowledge on the life of interstellar dust. Moreover, AKARI is still working on the near-infrared observations in its warm mission and its near-infrared spectroscopic ability covering from 2μm to 5μm is quite unique and useful for the future interstellar chemistry and physics. In this proceedings, .some of the latest results on the studies of interstellar dust based on AKARrs observations are introduced.
