A New Channel to Type Ia Supernovae: White Dwarf+Helium Star Systems
We have systematically studied the He star donor channel for type Ia su pemova (SN Ia) progenitors, in which a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) accretes material from a He main sequence star or a He subgiant to increase its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass. Employing Eggletons stellar evolution code, we performed bi nary evolution calculations for about 2600 close WD binary systems and mapped out the parameter spaces for producing SNe la. We have incorporated these results into a binary population synthesis code to obtain SN la birthrates. Although the Galactic birthrates from this channel are low (~ 0.3 x 10-3 yr-l), the He star donor channel can explain SNe Ia with short delay times (≤ 108 yr).
