EVN and MERLIN Observations of 3C 48 at 18 cm
We present observational results of the QSO 3C 48 with the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) and the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 18 cm wavelength on 6-7 June 2005. The MERLIN image reveals two major jet components in 3C 48: a compact component consists of the main body of the jet flow; an extended component like a cocoon encloses the compact jet body. The extended component turns to diffuse toward the east and northeast at ~ 0.25 arcsec from the nucleus. In the EVN image, the main jet body is resolved into a series of compact bright knots. The combined EVN and MERLIN data yields an image with an intermediate resolution in which the ridge line of the jet shows a sinusoidal curved trajectory. The polarized emission structure shown in the MERLIN image mostly arises from the inner region of the source. The magnitude field direction well aligns with the VLBI jet. The strongest polarization component detected in the EVN image is located where the jet turns to the east, suggesting strong disturbance taken place there. The sinuous path of the 3C48 jet could result from MHD instabilities in the jet flow.
