The Work of the IAU Program Group for the World-wide Development of Astronomy

IAU Commission 46 has several program groups. One that I chair is the Program group for the world-wide development of astronomy (PGWWDA). The aims of this PG are to visit countries with little or no contact with the IAU and to in troduce them to the many benefits of IAU membership. Our aim is also to enhance the relationship of IAU member developing countries with the IAU and the world astronomical community, by promoting further followup activities in those countries. A PGWWDA visit generally lasts 1 - 2 weeks by a PG committee member, and comprises lectures at the level from research seminar to popular, public outreach talks or talks to students or school groups. Since 2004, PGWWDA has made visits to Mongolia (2004), Kenya (2004), Iraq (2004), Cuba (2005), Trinidad and Tobago (2005), Bangladesh (2007), Uruguay (2007), Thailand and Laos (2008) Mozambique (2008), Uzbekistan (2008) and Peru and Ecuador (2008). Further visits in 2008 are planned for Sri Lanka and Ethiopia and in 2009 for Cambodia, Mauritius amongst several other countries.
