Communicating Astronomy Through Online Media
Communicating astronomy with Indonesia public is very challenging. But with the rising of intemet users in Indonesia, and the growing interest in finding news online, the question become : who wants this news and why? What people want from science reporting on the intemet? In fact there are not much different with the print media. Basically, they need to know fundamental concept and the latest news in astronomy. However internet becomes their first choice because information is growing rapidly on internet. You dont have to wait for a new story like in print media. With online media, we can directly communicate a topic in a discussion room with our users. This opportunity gave us wide perspective from our users about their interest and needs. In fact, people are mostly curios in something related to false information, false conception and current issues. Through langitselatan (southern sky), we gave fair explanation and fundamental knowledge about the issue. And as the result, discussion on those topic rapidly in crease and the statistic also. During 2007 and 2008, user interest slightly changes from hoax to reality. People become interest about dark skies and global warming issues. With this, we build awareness of astronomy among the people and also become a community builder throughout the nation. In 2009, langitselatan will take part in In ternational Year of Astronomy in Indonesia together with other astronomy institutions and community.
