1.Introduction The system of transitivity as first proposed by Halliday (1971) has been widely applied in stylistic analysis ( see, for instance, Toolan, 1998; Stockwell, 2002; Simpson, 2004; Ji & Shen, 2004, 2005).Since the transitivity model is concerned with the classification of different ways of organizing the experiential aspect of meaning, its not surprising that the applications of the model have, without exception, focused on the contrast among different process types.
