Transitivity, Indirection, and Redemption in Sheila Watsons The Double Hook

1.Introduction In What Is Stylistics and Why Are They Saying Such Terrible Things about It? Stanley Fish makes a most vehement and influential attack on stylistics.1 A major target of Fishs attack is circularity , which makes some people impatient with stylistics and its baggage ( 1981 : 55). Literary stylisticians investigate the relation between linguistic form and literary significance. But in Fishs view, the literary significance is preselected by the analyst and is, in effect, responsible for its own discovery (1981: 58).According to Fish, there is no gain in understanding in stylistic analysis: the procedure has been executed, but it hasnt gotten you anywhere (1981 : 55).Fishs view is shared by many literary critics who hold that a stylistic ‘ discovery ’ is really only a supplement to what the critic already knows; a means of offering pseudoscientific evidence-if such evidence were needed-for an interpretation made entirely through intuition ( Simpson, 1997 : 4).
