Politeness Strategies,Characterization Theory, and Drama Stylistics:A Synthetic Case Study with Theoretical Modifications
1.Introduction Among the many politeness theories and models, Brown and Levinson (1987) ( the B-L model) is generally acknowledged as the most systematic and instinctively appealing. In recent years, there have been a number of applications of the model to the analysis of drama text, such as Simpson (1989), and Abdesslem (2001), to name but a few. However, these applications, with the exception of Abdesslem (2001), are more or less sporadic analyses of short dialogues that fail to reveal the dramatic charactenzation process as a whole.
