TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY MARKETS FOR MECHANICAL PULPS
Mechanical pulping is at a crossroads. Production and use of wood-containing grades are plummeting in North America and Europe. While demand for papers traditionally made from thermomechanical pulps is growing in Asia, the demand is largely being met with recycled and other purchased fibre. Market mechanical pulp grades, frequently made from hardwood and mainly used as additives in papermakers’ recipes, are growing at a steady pace, and represent the only bright spot, although volumes are still significantly less than pulps for paper grades. This paper tries to identify novel markets for mechanical pulp fibres as the world moves to recycled fibres or digital media for much of the content formerly delivered by papers made from mechanical pulps. While significant challenges exist, there are interesting opportunities for producers willing to explore unconventional markets.
